The preferred reinforcement system for concrete structures traditionally has been steel. However, steel has its limitations, making it unsuitable for certain environments and applications. In such conditions, design engineers have struggled to find a satisfactory material and often had to accept inadequate solutions.
For 25 years, Pultron Composites has been working closely with engineers to develop technologies with high performance engineering properties to solve problems beyond the abilities of steel.
In 1985 Pultron worked with DuPont, Australia to develop a reinforcement system that addressed the shortfalls of steel. In 1990 Pultron worked in conjunction with BHP to develop a world first technology combining pultrusion and extrusion. The resulting product was a reinforcement system to stabilise high movement rock & coal seams, dramatically improving mine safety in difficult geotechnical conditions.
Since then Pultron has worked with various companies, developing FRP reinforcement specific to their requirements. Ongoing R&D projects ensure that Pultron is at the leading edge of technology.
Mateen-Bar is the ideal product, developed specifically to answer the call of engineers who are working in environments beyond the abilities of traditional steel reinforcement.
Resistance to Corrosion / Chemical
Mateen-Bar is highly resistant to chemical attack, so does not rust. This makes it ideal for marine applications, chemical plants and other environments where steel is unsuitable. It offers extended life-spans. Mateen-Bar is also the ideal material for applications where minimal concrete coverage may be required- since its corrosion resistance eliminates leeching of rust stains which otherwise ruin the surface aesthetics.

Use of the Mateen-Bar means that electrical induction is not caused by stray electrical fields. Often in areas of high electrical fields significant power is lost due to induction in the surrounding steel reinforcement. This creates a number of problems including extensive earthing systems (required for electrical safety), greater concrete coverage requirements (for insulation), accelerated corrosion of rebars (electrolysis) - and often increased installation time and cost welding every joint / lap, heating of concrete from within (due to eddy currents), creating a two-fold energy wastage problem, in the induction itself, compounded by the increased cooling required to remove this unwanted heat.

Low Thermal Conductivity
Increases the thermal insulation properties of the concrete, so can be used to create a more energy efficient structure.
In tunnelling projects, Pultron Mateen-Bar is specified for Soft-eyes. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) can cut through this easily without risk of damage.
High tensile strength
Mateen-Bar has a very high tensile strength, offering designers higher factors of safety.
The concrete bond strength of Mateen-Bar has been optimised, with values of 20MPa (30MPa concrete) as per ACI 440.3R-04, ASTM C192/C 192M-07.
In any application where corrosion resistance is paramount, mild steel is unsuitable. High-grade Stainless steel or Mateen-Bar may be considered suitable reinforcements. In such cases, a cost saving of 40% on reinforcement would be expected by specifying Mateen-Bar.
Where coverage can be reduced by use of Mateen-Bar, the saving on concrete will also be considered favourable in a total system cost analysis.
